An Unpretentious Wedding at Finca Binissatí, Mallorca

Getting ready at the finca

Binissatí gave them the whole morning and most of the estate. The men spent it around the pool and in a room with an old painting on the wall, fixing each other's cufflinks; the dress hung against the white wall and a pair of mules waited on a leather sofa.

The ceremony was set out among the oaks, wooden chairs on the bare ground and petals scattered where the aisle would be. Guests came up the dirt track from the house, and an old Land Rover sat parked under the trees through the whole thing.

Afterwards we walked the estate: the warm stone walls with the bougainvillea over them, the arched door with its lantern, and then out onto the track between the fields while the sun dropped.

Vinyl at the aperitivo, paella in the orange grove

After the ceremony, the aperitivo took place on the open ground beside the finca, with a DJ playing vinyl, an unusually good detail, and one that set the tone. Dinner was paella, served in the patio de naranjos, the orange grove courtyard, as the light went soft.

Then the clastra. Musicians had flown in from London to play saxophone alongside the DJ, and the 17th-century courtyard turned into something between a wedding and a very good party among friends. No pretension anywhere in it. Just people who like each other, dancing late.
